What is TMS Therapy? TMS in short

It is a treatment modality recommended by the American Psychiatric Association since 2010 and FDA cleared since 2008 for the treatment of major depressive disorder.

TMS does not affect cognitive functioning such as memory compared to other treatment options such as ECT. TMS is free from common antidepressant drug side effects such as weight gain and sexual disfunction.

Outpatient procedure

  • FDA cleared*
  • No anesthesia
  • Series of pulsed magnetic stimulation to the brain Safe, with high tolerability
  • Most common side effects from TMS are headache and nausea
  • Clients are able to resume daily activities right after treatment
  • May be used with or without antidepressants (determined by physician)

The effectiveness of TMS

TMS is indicated for use in people with major depressive disorder who have not responded to at least one antidepressant medication.

What is Major Depressive Disorder?

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a common mental condition. According to the World Health Organization, globally more than 300 million people of all ages suffers from depression. Statistics by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) indicates that more than 17 million U.S. adults – over 7% of the population – had at least one major depressive episode in the past year. More women than man are affected. Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide.

Symptoms

MDD can present different symptoms, depending on the person. Common symptoms that persist of a period of two weeks or more can include:

  • Changes in sleep
  • Changes in appetite
  • Lack of concentration
  • Loss of energy
  • Lack of interest in activities
  • Hopelessness or guilty thoughts
  • Physical aches and pain
  • Suicidal thoughts
